Matt Lamination

Matt lamination is a finishing process that applies a thin, clear, non-glossy plastic film over printed paper using heat and pressure to create a smooth, glare-free surface.

Key Characteristics

Appearance: It diffuses light instead of reflecting it, removing optical glare and giving prints a flat, elegant, and velvety look.

Texture: It feels silky and smooth to the touch, adding a high-end tactile quality.

Color Impact: It deepens dark tones like blacks, though it slightly mutes bright colors compared to a glossy finish.

Soft Touch Lamination

Soft touch lamination is a premium print finishing process that bonds a smooth, velvety, peach-skin plastic film to paper using heat and pressure.

Key Characteristics

Luxurious Feel: Gives paper a soft, suede-like texture that feels rich in the hand.

Less Glare: Creates an ultra-matte look that cuts down shiny reflections.

Spot UV

Spot UV is a special printing technique that applies a clear, glossy varnish to targeted areas ("spots") of a printed design rather than the whole page. Ultraviolet light instantly dries and hardens the coating, creating a high-shine finish that contrasts sharply with matte backgrounds.

How Spot UV Works

A liquid polymer varnish is applied to specific parts of printed cardstock or paper.

The material passes under ultraviolet (UV) light, which cures and hardens the liquid instantly.

Modern digital techniques can layer the varnish to make the glossy areas raised or textured (called raised or 3D spot UV).

Foiling

Main Methods of Foiling

Hot Foil Stamping (Block Foiling): A custom metal plate (die) is heated and pressed down hard onto the foil. This leaves a shiny graphic that is slightly pressed into the paper.

Digital Foiling: A modern, plate-free method where foil bonds directly to special digital toner or adhesive. It leaves a smooth, flat finish level with the paper.

Cold Foiling: An inline process where a UV-curable adhesive is printed onto the page first, and the foil is applied without heat.

Types of Foil

How the Process Works

Two Dies: Printers use a raised metal plate (male die) and a recessed matching plate (female die).

Pressure and Heat: The paper is placed between the dies, and heavy pressure—often combined with heat—pushes the fibers upward.

Blind Embossing: When done with no ink or foil, the raised design relies entirely on light and shadow for a clean, elegant look.

Combined Finishes: Embossing can be paired with ink or foil stamping to make logos and text pop even more.
